Four plants now use automated vehicle movements. Faster rollout strengthens the deployment case, while external sensors and recovery support define its limits.

## Summary

BMW reports one million automated vehicle movements across four plants. Embotech says the second 500,000 took seven months versus 15 for the first. This is a network rollout measure, not proof of doubled same-site productivity or fully unattended operations.

## Key facts

- BMW’s October 27 release identifies four operating plants, with around 3,500 automated movements daily across the network.

- Oxford accounts for more than 53,000 movements over the past year; the million is a network milestone.

- Embotech says the second 500,000 movements took seven months, versus 15 for the first; changing scope limits the comparison.

- Plant-installed lidar, external planning and recovery support remain part of the system.

## Report

BMW says it has completed one million automated vehicle movements across its production network. Its October 27 release identifies four operating sites: Dingolfing, Leipzig and Regensburg in Germany, plus MINI Plant Oxford in Britain. Around 3,500 movements now take place daily across the network.

Oxford contributed more than 53,000 movements over the past year. The million is the network milestone, not Oxford’s total. BMW says Oxford also connects the movement system directly to production equipment, positioning vehicles beside a lifting device for a defined operation.

### More moves, within an equipped factory

Technology supplier Embotech says the first 500,000 movements took 15 months and the next 500,000 took seven. Dividing equal movement counts by those periods gives roughly 33,000 versus 71,000 movements a month, a 2.14-fold increase in average network pace. That is evidence of expanding use, not a controlled measurement of higher productivity at an unchanged site.

The system’s operating boundary matters. BMW installs lidar, laser sensors that measure surrounding objects, along the route and combines them with external motion planning and computing. Vehicles receive movement commands regardless of their own equipment options. BMW had already described this architecture when Dingolfing entered series operation in November 2024.

This makes factory infrastructure part of the autonomy system. A buyer must evaluate route coverage, equipment interfaces and recovery procedures alongside vehicle movement. Success inside defined production areas does not establish driverless capability on public roads.

### Recovery remains an operating task

In an undated account of the earlier half-million milestone, Embotech’s chief executive described factory workers inspecting aborted drives, permitting restarts or driving vehicles to their destination. He also identified lidar alignment and software-release support as operational work. That account is historical context, not a measurement of today’s intervention rate.

BMW and Embotech are commercial partners, and BMW says its venture fund invested in the supplier in December 2024. Their figures are attributed operating disclosures, not an independent audit. The next useful test is matched site-level reporting on completed journeys, interventions, recovery time and deployment cost. BMW plans to introduce the system at Spartanburg in 2027; that expansion remains ahead.

## Conclusion

Calculates the change in pace between equal movement-count milestones while separating network expansion from same-site productivity. Compares current rollout with the documented infrastructure and earlier recovery workload to define an operator’s next acceptance measurements.
