Japan's Mitsubishi Motors and Tokyo University startup Highlanders have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop humanoid robots for Mitsubishi manufacturing sites and study production at the company's Kyoto Plant. Mitsubishi says it will first use the robots in its own facilities to collect operating data and know-how, while examining whether unused buildings can support production in early 2027. The announcement is a plan, not a production launch.[1]
Electrek reported on Aug. 7 that the proposal could reach up to 1,000 Highlanders robots per month; ITmedia's Japanese report says Mitsubishi described a production capability at that level from the start, with factory introduction targeted for the second half of 2027. Neither report establishes an order, completed line, customer, robot output or operating performance.[2,3]
The decision delta
Humanoid robotics is usually framed as a model-and-demo race. This agreement adds an industrialization test: an automaker is offering its manufacturing, quality, durability, safety, mechatronics and factory-operations capabilities to a young robot developer, while also testing the machines in its own workflows. If the Kyoto review becomes a commissioned line and the robots generate repeatable factory data, manufacturability—not another stage demo—becomes a competitive asset. That could benefit Highlanders and suppliers; it also exposes Mitsubishi to execution risk.[1]
Keep the number bounded. The 1,000-per-month figure is a proposed capacity, not an achieved run rate, and Mitsubishi has not named the first task, unit economics, financing amount, safety record or outside customer. The next measurable checkpoint is a dated early-2027 feasibility decision, followed by evidence of line commissioning, first factory installation and disclosed robot count or uptime. Until then, this is a serious manufacturing option, not proof that humanoid production has scaled.[1,2,3]
