The Robot Economy reference
Industrial robots
Industrial robots perform programmed physical work in production environments. The machine is part of an installation: tooling, integration, process design and productive use determine what the cell delivers. Follow factory news alongside the definitions, measurement distinctions and cost research below.
Industrial robots and factory tasks
The International Federation of Robotics describes industrial robots as reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulators. Factory applications include assembly, welding, handling, packaging and palletizing. The task and workpiece matter more to a comparison than a dramatic demonstration in another setting.
Robot, cell and production line
Keep the scope of each claim clear. A robot purchase is not a completed cell; a commissioned cell is not proof of sustained output. Ask about tooling, controls, material supply, changeovers, human work and acceptance tests. Integration can determine whether a machine fits the actual production process.
Installations are not all the same measure
Annual installations, the stock of operating robots, shipments, production and orders describe different populations or periods. Our China installations research separates these measures and preserves the reporting year. A global total cannot establish a particular local buyer’s demand or returns.
Utilization changes the cost screen
The same installed cell spreads its fixed annual cost across different productive hours. Our disclosed nine-case model compares one-, two- and three-shift assumptions. It does not predict layoffs, certify output or establish an actual customer payback. The calculator lets readers change the inputs while retaining those limits.
Read the evidence
- China Took 59% of 2025 Industrial Robot Installations
Industrial robot installations grew in China and the Americas while Europe contracted in 2025. Separate production, order and shipment records show why the global total cannot stand in for a local buyer pipeline.
- The same modeled robot cell costs three times more per hour on one shift
A transparent nine-case model shows how productive hours reshape robot economics, while official records show why density and national wages cannot predict jobs.
- Accurate Box’s fourth robot makes line mobility part of deployment
The New Jersey packaging maker installed a mobile Rigorous palletizer that handles about 112 cases an hour across folder-gluers, but uptime and payback remain unreported.
